Raipur: Security forces in Chhattisgarh achieved a major success against Maoist insurgency after neutralising two high-ranking cadres during an encounter in Bijapur district.
The operation, led by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), was launched early Friday morning based on credible intelligence of Maoist movement in the dense forests of south-west Bijapur.
Profiles of the Slain Maoists
The deceased have been identified as Hidma Podiyam (34) from Bedset in the Indravati area, and Munna Madkam (25) from Katekalyan in Dantewada district. Both were active in Platoon No. 01 under Company No. 02 and carried rewards of Rs 8 lakh each. Their deaths mark a significant setback for Maoist operations in Bastar, given their long-standing role in orchestrating attacks against security forces.
Operation and Recovery
According to Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav, the DRG team moved swiftly after confirming inputs of Maoist activity. The gun battle began in the morning and continued intermittently until security forces secured the area.
From the site, forces recovered a cache of arms and explosives, including a .303 rifle with live rounds, a 12-bore gun, batteries, Cardex wire, scanner sets, and Maoist literature. Officials believe these materials were integral to the group’s communication and propaganda network.
Renewed Push Against Insurgency
The encounter forms part of a wider counter-insurgency campaign that has intensified over the past year across Sukma, Dantewada, and Bijapur. Security forces have been focusing on dismantling Maoist leadership structures and cutting off supply chains that sustain their activities.
Strategic Impact
Officials note that the slain cadres were not only armed operatives but also played a role in ideological indoctrination and recruitment. Their elimination, coupled with the seizure of weapons and propaganda material, is expected to weaken Maoist morale and disrupt their organisational strength.
The Chhattisgarh government has reiterated its determination to restore peace and development in the conflict-affected Bastar region.
