Chief Minister’s health scheme launched in Punjab, Free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh per family

The Punjab government has achieved something in the field of healthcare for its citizens that no other state in the country has done before. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal launched the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme for the people of Punjab in Mohali on Thursday. The scheme had been announced earlier, but its formal launch took place with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Arvind Kejriwal distributing health cards to selected families. Under this scheme, every family in the state will receive free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh. For this, every citizen of Punjab will need to obtain a health card.

On this occasion, Arvind Kejriwal said that in hospitals where previously only wealthy people could afford treatment, now farmers, laborers, and citizens from all walks of life will be able to receive treatment by showing their health cards. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party has fulfilled its promise of free treatment for the people of Punjab. A key feature of the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme is that it also provides treatment for serious illnesses such as kidney transplants, cancer, and heart-related diseases. It is noteworthy that the state government is already providing free education, free electricity, and free bus travel for women in Punjab. Now, free healthcare has also been provided to the citizens. Importantly, there is no age limit or income eligibility criteria for this scheme.

Punjab has 65 lakh families and 3 crore citizens. All families will be given health cards. Anyone with a Punjab voter ID card and Aadhaar card will be eligible for this scheme. Pensioners, government employees, and even large business owners can also benefit from it. Cards will be issued at more than 9,000 service centers across the state. For the convenience of the people, the government will send tokens to every household, based on which registration will take place. Registration camps will also be set up in hospitals.

The name of each member will be registered biometrically. Once an application is submitted, the card will be issued within 10-15 days. It is expected that the card issuance process will be completed within 3-4 months. The limit of Rs. 10 lakh is for the entire family and is for cashless treatment annually. All major and minor illnesses are covered under this scheme for the beneficiaries. This includes kidney transplants, dialysis, brain and spine transplants, and heart surgeries, among others. Currently, 850 hospitals are providing treatment under this scheme.

The list of hospitals is being circulated. Opposition parties have criticized the Punjab government for allocating an insufficient amount of Rs. 1200 crore for this scheme. However, this criticism is unfounded. The government is committed to making this ambitious scheme, which provides healthcare facilities to the citizens of the state, a success. The allocation of funds for this scheme will increase in the future.

Therefore, this scheme is being welcomed by all sections of society in the state. This scheme provides health benefits of Rs. 10 lakh, which is double the Rs. 5 lakh treatment facility provided under the Central Government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. Citizens of Punjab are more fortunate in this regard compared to other states. This scheme is certainly good news for the people of Punjab.
