Eight Killed in China Storms; Dozens Buried After Gansu Landslide

Beijing: At least eight people were killed and one person remains missing after severe thunderstorms and gale-force winds battered Hubei Province in central China, while a landslide in Gansu Province left dozens trapped, prompting large-scale rescue operations.

The disasters are part of a series of extreme weather events affecting several regions of China.

Severe Storms Leave Eight Dead in Hubei

According to provincial emergency management authorities, powerful thunderstorms and strong winds struck the cities of Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday.

Some areas experienced level-13 gale-force winds, while local authorities also reported tornado activity during the severe convective weather.

The worst damage was reported in three communities of Huanggang City’s Huangzhou District, where 275 people were injured.

Authorities have evacuated 408 residents to safer locations as rescue and relief operations continue.

Landslide in Gansu Buries Dozens

In a separate incident, a landslide struck Nanhe Township in Tanchang County, Longnan City, in northwest China’s Gansu Province at around 6:56 a.m. on Tuesday.

Local authorities said 33 people are believed to have been buried, while 17 have been rescued so far. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the remaining missing persons.

Flooding Adds to China’s Weather Crisis

The latest disasters follow widespread flooding caused by torrential rainfall in Nanning City, where two people were killed and around 55,000 residents were affected earlier this week.

Nearly 48,000 people were evacuated after heavy rains triggered flooding and breaches at several reservoirs.

The flooding was linked to Typhoon Maysak, which brought intense rainfall across large parts of the region. Authorities reported that water levels in 59 rivers across Guangxi exceeded warning levels.

Emergency Response Intensified

China’s Ministry of Water Resources has upgraded its flood-control emergency response in Guangxi from Level III to Level II as authorities continue monitoring rising water levels and conducting evacuations in vulnerable areas.

Rescue teams remain deployed across the affected provinces as officials assess the full extent of the damage caused by the ongoing severe weather.
