Chinese BAT-BMS App Shutting Down Delhi E-Rickshaws? Transport Minister Orders Probe

New Delhi: Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh has responded to viral claims that a Chinese mobile application, BAT-BMS, can remotely shut down e-rickshaws by connecting to their Bluetooth-enabled battery management systems (BMS). The issue gained attention after several videos surfaced on social media showing e-rickshaws allegedly being switched off through the app.

The minister said that although no formal complaint has been received, the Transport Department has been asked to investigate the matter and verify whether the claims are genuine. Authorities will also examine if any security vulnerabilities exist in the battery systems used by e-rickshaws.

    What Is the BAT-BMS App?

BAT-BMS is a battery management application designed to monitor lithium battery performance, including battery health, voltage and charging status. Experts believe the app can connect only to compatible Bluetooth-enabled battery systems, meaning not every e-rickshaw is affected. If proper security measures such as authentication are missing, unauthorized access may be possible.

Why Has the Issue Raised Concerns?

The viral videos have triggered concerns over the cybersecurity of electric vehicles, especially as thousands of e-rickshaws operate on Delhi roads every day. Drivers fear that if battery systems can be accessed remotely, it could affect passenger safety, disrupt traffic and impact their daily earnings.

    What Happens Next?

The Delhi government has directed officials to investigate the viral claims and submit a report. If any security loopholes are found, manufacturers may be asked to strengthen battery management systems with better authentication and software updates. The findings of the investigation will determine whether any regulatory action is required.
