New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. CJP co-convenor Saurav submitted a formal notice of the protest to the Parliament Street police station on Wednesday. The organization says a large number of people are expected to participate in the protest.
This announcement comes a day after opposition parties staged a protest against the Election Commission, in which Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several MPs from the INDIA bloc, protested against the Election Commission and demanded the CEC’s resignation.
Opposition protest moves from Akbar Road to Akashvani Bhavan
On Tuesday, opposition MPs attempted to march towards the Election Commission, protesting against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, and Pawan Khera, were briefly detained during the protest.
Delhi Police later filed an FIR based on a complaint. The complaint alleged that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and other MPs and others accompanying them had entered the Akashvani Bhavan complex during Tuesday’s protest.
This protest by opposition parties also came amid ongoing controversy over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Opposition leaders have alleged irregularities in the SIR and demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
What did the Election Commission say?
The Election Commission stated on Tuesday that no political party had requested a formal meeting with the Commission as of 4 p.m.
According to the ECI, at around 4 p.m., the Delhi Police informed the Commission that a delegation of MPs led by Rahul Gandhi wished to meet the Election Commission and submit a memorandum.
Protest at Jantar Mantar again on October 10
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has announced a new protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10. The organization is preparing to protest demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
CJP co-convenor Saurav informed the Delhi Police about the protest, stating that the organization expects a large turnout. He added that the police had been informed in advance.
Accusations also leveled against the Maharashtra Police
Abhijeet Dipke alleged that police in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, have issued notices to CJP supporters, pressuring them to refrain from participating in the protest in Delhi.
According to Dipke, some of the notices asked supporters for information about their plans to travel to Delhi and the source of funding for the trip. He also claimed that the notices raised concerns that the proposed protest would turn violent.
Dipke questioned how the police could have known in advance that the protest would be violent. However, these allegations are Deepak’s own and cannot be viewed as independently established facts.
Deepak also attacks ‘One Nation, One Election’
During a press conference on October 6, Abhijeet Deepak also questioned the government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. He alleged that its aim was to move the country towards “One Nation, One Political Party.”
The CJP has stated that the October 10 protest will focus on its issues related to the Election Commission, CEC Gyanesh Kumar, and the SIR.
