New Delhi: The judicial custody of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das was extended by two days on Monday. The two leaders were initially remanded to five-day judicial custody on October 14th for allegedly entering Delhi’s Jantar Mantar by breaking through the locked gates.
The two leaders were detained on October 13th. Jantar Mantar was recently removed from the list of designated protest sites. On Monday, they were produced before the Special Executive Magistrate at the Mandir Marg police station for further proceedings. They were then taken back to Tihar Jail. They will be produced again on Wednesday.
The CJP has alleged that authorities are deliberately delaying legal proceedings to prevent the release of its leaders. The party says Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das entered the Jantar Mantar complex to hoist the national flag and raise slogans. The party is also continuously challenging the decision to withdraw Jantar Mantar’s designation as a designated protest site.
CJP leader Abhijit Dipke alleged in a social media post on Sunday that the state government is deliberately prolonging the alleged illegal detention of Ashutosh and Saurav.
He claimed that there is no legal basis for keeping the two leaders in jail. Despite this, tactics are being used to delay court proceedings to prevent their release.
Meanwhile, the party’s legal head, Ratna Singh, accused the Delhi Police and state officials of obstructing the proceedings before the Special Executive Magistrate. She claimed that the hearing, scheduled for 12 noon, was delayed by several hours.
