CJP Leaders Detained Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest

The three CJP leaders were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after arriving in the national capital to participate in the planned protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The demonstration was called over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

CJP’s head of legal affairs, Ratna Singh, had earlier confirmed the leaders’ release following their appearance before the SEM court.

Delhi Police Register Over 20 FIRs Over Protest Attempts

Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered more than 20 FIRs in connection with attempts to forcibly stage protests in the national capital, officials said on Sunday.

The cases involve alleged offences including obstructing official duties, taking the law into one’s own hands and assaulting police personnel during demonstrations around Jantar Mantar.

On Saturday, more than 3,000 protesters opposing CEC Gyanesh Kumar were detained across Delhi. Those detained included former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Authorities had denied permission for the planned demonstration and warned against unauthorised gatherings. Security arrangements included roadblocks, traffic diversions and internet restrictions to prevent a repeat of the CJP’s July protest at Jantar Mantar, which had turned violent.

The detained protesters were taken to different locations, including Chhatrasal Stadium and various police stations. Most, including the opposition leaders, were released later on Saturday evening.
