CM Dhami assures justice after speaking to Angel Chakma’s father

NewDelhi: Amid growing outrage over the murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to the victim’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, on Monday over the phone and expressed his deep condolences and assured strict action against the culprits. The family has described the attack as motivated by racial hatred.

Attacked after altercation in market, died on December 26

Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student at a university in Dehradun, was attacked on December 9 following an altercation in Selaqui market. Angel and his younger brother, Michael, had a fight with Suraj Khawas (22) and his companions. The accused are alleged to have attacked them with a knife and brass knuckles.

Angel was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he died on December 26.

The victim’s father, currently posted with the BSF in Manipur, alleges that during the attack, the accused were making racial remarks, calling his son “Chinese.”

 Five accused arrested, one absconding; search continues in Nepal

Chief Minister Dhami stated that five of the six accused have been arrested, while one—Yagyaraj Awasthi, a resident of Nepal’s Kanchanpur district—is absconding. A reward of ₹25,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest, and a team has been sent to the Nepal border.

FIRs were previously registered for cases of causing injury and threats. Later, based on the medical report, charges of attempted murder and murder after Angel’s death were also added. The arrested accused include two minors, while the others include Suraj Khawas, Avinash Negi (25), and Sumit (25).

Assurance of all possible assistance to the family

The Chief Minister said that students from India and abroad come to study in the state, so such incidents are extremely sad and unacceptable. He stated that he has spoken to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh regarding this matter.

He assured the victim’s family of all possible assistance and ensuring justice.
