Punjab: CM Mann Visits Hoshiarpur; Farmer Leaders Placed Under House Arrest Ahead of Tanda Event

Jalandhar: Ahead of CM Bhagwant Mann’s visit to the Ghogra area of ​​Tanda Urmar in Hoshiarpur, the police have placed a farmer leader and a leader of the Government Teachers’ Union under house arrest. The farmer leaders were prevented from leaving their homes after 10:00 AM. Jangvir Singh Chauhan, State President of the Doaba Kisan Committee (Punjab), and Amar Singh personally confirmed this information.

Chauhan stated that the situation regarding the outstanding sugarcane dues payable by the government remains critical. The sugarcane crushing season for 2025-2026 has concluded. Despite four months having passed since the season ended, and a month and a half since the sugar mills shut down, the Punjab government has failed to make payments as per its promises.

‘Lok Milni’ Program to be Held in Ghogra

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is scheduled to hold a ‘Lok Milni’ (Public Interaction) program in Ghogra, Hoshiarpur, on May 3. During this event, a delegation from the Doaba Kisan Committee intends to meet with him to seek an explanation regarding the non-payment of outstanding sugarcane dues.

The organization has stated that if a resolution cannot be reached through dialogue, they will be compelled to resort to sit-in protests and road blockades. The Committee has issued an ultimatum to the government: if the outstanding dues are not deposited into the farmers’ bank accounts by Wednesday, the National Highway will be blocked on May 7, for which the government and the administration will bear full responsibility.

Organizations and Leaders Condemn House Arrest

Organizations affiliated with farmer and teacher unions have condemned the government’s move to arrest leaders of the Tanda Teachers’ Union and Farmers’ Union ahead of the CM’s visit. Akali leader Bikram Majithia took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to write that the Bhagwant Mann government is engaging in high-handedness against the people. He alleged that farmers are being denied an opportunity to meet with the authorities and are instead being confined to their homes.
