The biting cold in Rohtak is taking its toll. The bodies of two people were found in the railway station complex, and the body of an elderly man was found at the Jan Seva Sansthan on Bhiwani Road. It is suspected that all three died due to the extreme cold. While the administration has opened five night shelters at the old bus stand, the new bus stand, and Gandhi Camp, no information boards or signs have been put up at the railway station, even though the temperature on Tuesday ranged from a maximum of 21 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius.
The night shelter at the old bus stand is only one kilometre from the railway station. If an information board had been placed there, perhaps these people would not have died from the cold. GRP (Government Railway Police) woman ASI Babita said that on Monday night, they received information that the body of a 49-year-old man was found near the down line at the railway station. There were no signs of injury to suggest he had been hit by a train. It is suspected that he died due to illness or the cold.
He was wearing a yellow T-shirt, a grey vest, and grey lower garments. Since his identity could not be established, the body was placed in the mortuary at PGIMS (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences). Meanwhile, the body of another person was found at the station. As his identity could not be ascertained, ASI Raj Singh had the body placed in the PGIMS mortuary.
Separately, Constable Surender of the Bahu Akbarpur police station said that a 70-year-old man had been living at the Jan Seva Sansthan for the past six months. Two days ago, his illness worsened due to the cold. He was brought to PGIMS in a critical condition, where he was declared dead. On Tuesday, the Bahu Akbarpur police handed over the body to his family after the post-mortem examination.
