Compensation for flood hit people: 13 ministers to distribute cheques across state today

The government is working to fulfill its promise of providing compensation to flood-affected people in Punjab before Diwali. Today, 13 ministers across the state have been assigned the responsibility of handing over compensation checks to flood-affected people. Compensation to flood victims will be distributed under Mission Rehabilitation.

CM Bhagwant Mann launched Mission Rehabilitation by distributing checks worth ₹5.70 crore to 631 farmers in Ajnala.

The worst flood in Punjab since 1987

Punjab experienced its worst flood in August 1987, affecting 23 districts. Following this, the government declared a disaster, affecting over 500,000 people. As soon as this situation developed, aid began to flow into Punjab from several states. Meanwhile, Punjabis themselves set an example during difficult times. From singers and artists to Punjabis living abroad, everyone volunteered to help.

Politics over the 1600 crore package

The Punjab floods were a nationwide issue. Central Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chauhan visited first, calling it a deluge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi then arrived. He announced a 1600 crore package, stating that the state already had 12,000 crore rupees. Politics played out over this issue.

The Punjab government called a special session, condemning the previous Punjab government and the central government for the floods. Following this, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with Home Minister Amit Shah.
