Congress Appoints Pargat Singh As Punjab Chief, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring Resigns

Jalandhar, Punjab: Congress has appointed Jalandhar Cantonment MLA and former Olympian hockey player Pargat Singh as the new Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief, giving the Doaba region the top organisational post after 16 years.

Pargat Singh’s appointment comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and at a time when the party has been dealing with factional differences and organisational challenges.

The Congress had last appointed a party president from the Doaba region in 2010, when Mohinder Singh Kaypee held the post.

Pargat Singh’s Appointment Seen As Strategic Move

Political experts see the appointment not merely as a change in leadership but as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The Congress high command chose Pargat Singh at a time when internal factionalism and leadership-related differences have remained a challenge for the party. Leaders from the Malwa and Majha regions were also reportedly in contention for the post, but the party eventually settled on Pargat Singh.

Pargat Singh is also considered close to the faction led by former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Congress Eyes Doaba Amid BJP’s Growing Presence

Pargat Singh’s appointment also gives the Congress a prominent face in the Doaba region, which comprises 23 Assembly seats.

The region has witnessed increased political activity by the BJP in recent months. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Jalandhar twice, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently addressed a rally at Paragpur in Jalandhar Cantonment.

The BJP has also focused on issues and initiatives linked to the Doaba region, including Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Dera Ballan and the naming of Adampur Airport after Sri Guru Ravidas Maharaj.

Against this backdrop, Congress is looking to strengthen its traditional support base in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr through Pargat Singh’s appointment.

    Balancing Factions And Social Equations

Experts believe the Congress high command is also attempting to address factional differences within the Punjab unit.

Former PPCC chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring comes from the Malwa region, while former chief Partap Singh Bajwa represents the Majha belt. Pargat Singh’s appointment gives Doaba representation at the top organisational level.

Pargat Singh is also a Jat Sikh, like Raja Warring. Political expert Dr KK Rattu said the decision could indicate that the party has focused more on strengthening the organisation than changing its social representation.

The party, however, will need to maintain a balance among leaders from Malwa and Majha, urban Hindu voters and Dalit communities, besides strengthening its presence in Doaba, experts said.

Hockey Background May Help Connect With Youth

A former captain of the Indian hockey team and an Olympian, Pargat Singh has a public profile beyond electoral politics.

His sporting background could help the party connect with young voters and sports enthusiasts. He has also regularly raised issues including law and order, unemployment, drugs, the agricultural crisis and sports infrastructure under the AAP government.

    Dual Challenge For Pargat Singh

While the new post increases Pargat Singh’s political responsibilities, he will also have to retain his own Jalandhar Cantonment constituency.

He won the seat by a large margin in 2017, but his victory margin fell to 5,808 votes in the 2022 Assembly election against AAP’s Surinder Singh Sodhi.

As Punjab Congress chief, Pargat Singh will therefore face the dual challenge of strengthening the party organisation across the state while maintaining his own electoral base.

Family Celebrates Pargat Singh’s New Responsibility

Celebrations were held at Pargat Singh’s residence after his appointment as PPCC chief. His wife Barinder Kaur, family members and supporters celebrated by dancing to drumbeats and distributing sweets.

Barinder Kaur said the appointment was a moment of double happiness for the family. She recalled that Pargat Singh became an MLA around the time their first grandson, Teg, was born, while his appointment as Punjab Congress chief came around the birth of their second grandson.

Describing Pargat Singh as a sportsperson who knows how to face challenges, she expressed confidence that he would strongly raise the voice of Punjab’s people and give the party a new direction.

Barinder Kaur also said that she initially came to know about the appointment through calls from party workers and later spoke to Pargat Singh for around five minutes to confirm the news.
