Contract employees at Chandigarh PGI on strike today, demand to regular employment

Contract employees at Chandigarh’s PGI (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) went on a 24-hour strike today (Tuesday). During this time, the employees will also be observing a hunger strike. The employees have made it clear that they will not be working. These employees are deployed in various departments. This is likely to cause difficulties for patients, as only 1200 regular employees will be working.

People from not only Chandigarh but also Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Delhi come to PGI for treatment. Therefore, the strike could cause significant problems for patients. However, the PGI management has taken several steps to deal with the situation. The strike began at 6 AM.

PGI takes steps for the public

The PGI administration has taken precautionary measures to prevent inconvenience to patients. The focus will be on the Emergency and Advanced Trauma Center. Regular hospital attendants, nursing staff, and support staff have been assigned additional duties. All heads of departments have been instructed to be present on-site to manage the situation. All employee leave has been canceled during the strike.

The employees have been protesting for their demands for the past 46 days. The Joint Action Committee has announced a strike and protest. Joint Action Committee Chairman Ashwani Munjal said that this strike against the PGI management will continue until 6 AM on December 31st. Their demands include the regularization of contract employees and payment of outstanding arrears, among others.
