Corruption: Vigilance Bureau arrests Assistant Registrar for taking bribe of Rs. 1,00,000

Punjab Vigilance Bureau, during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, has caught Nikhil Garg, Assistant Registrar Cooperative Societies, Jagraon, District Ludhiana, who also has additional charge of Doraha office, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,00,000 at his residence in Patiala.

Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that the said accused has been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by the manager of a cooperative society.

A bribe of Rs 5 lakh was demanded for recommending transfer

He said that the complainant alleged that the said accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from him for recommending his transfer application at Doraha. After receiving the bribe amount, accused Nikhil Garg signed the previous date entry in the proceeding book of the cooperative society Doraha regarding the complainant’s transfer.

Apart from this, the accused had demanded bribe money in the name of senior officers and after taking the bribe money, he had also informed his senior officer of the cooperative society. The complainant had recorded the entire conversation regarding the demand for bribe.

Accused caught red-handed while taking Rs 1 lakh

Not agreeing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana. Acting on his complaint, the Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap, during which the accused Assistant Registrar was arrested red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 1,00,000 from the complainant in the presence of two authorized witnesses. In this regard, a case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau’s EOW police station, Ludhiana and further investigation into the matter is underway.
