Kajol Gets Court Protection Against AI and Deepfake Abuse

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kajol has received temporary protection from the court, preventing several e-commerce platforms, social media accounts, and AI-based services from unauthorized use of her name, image, and persona. The parties named in the case include Kash Collective, Pinkswag, Nazrrco, Amazon, Meta Platforms Inc., YouTube, SpicyChat.ai, and Talkie-ai.com.

The court recognized Kajol’s trademark “KAJOL” and her personality and publicity rights, granting her relief to protect her from potential harm.

Protection from Morphed and AI-Generated Content

Kajol had alleged that the defendants were selling merchandise featuring her images, creating AI content and chatbots using her persona, and hosting morphed and pornographic content.

The court stated, “The actress (Kajol) has the right to protection from morphed and pornographic content and AI-generated images that depict her in inappropriate attire, inappropriate settings, and in inappropriate situations with other film personalities… Such content is damaging her reputation and may mislead the public.”

Directions for Platforms and Authorities

The court prohibited the defendants from using any variations of Kajol’s name, such as “Kajol Mukherjee,” “Kajol Devgan,” and “Kajol Mukherjee Devgan,” as well as from using her image, voice, and personality for any commercial or personal gain.

Kash Collective, Pinkswag, Nazrrco, and Amazon were directed to remove merchandise bearing her name and image. Social media platforms and websites were ordered to remove flagged content and provide information about the relevant accounts within 72 hours. The Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology were also directed to block the designated websites within 72 hours.

Next Hearing and Legal Representation

The next hearing in this case will be held on April 23, 2026. Kajol was represented by a team of lawyers including Praveen Anand, Amit Naik, Dhruv Anand, Madhu Gadodia, Udita Patro, and others. Amazon, Meta Platforms Inc., and YouTube were represented by their own legal representatives.
