Walsh appointed Zimbabwe bowling consultant for T20 World Cup

Zimbabwe Cricket has announced the appointment of legendary former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh as a bowling consultant for the men’s national team in preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Walsh has already started working with the squad as Zimbabwe intensifies its preparations for the global event, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.

Bringing global experience to Zimbabwe’s bowling unit

Walsh, widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history, brings decades of international experience to the Zimbabwe camp. He was the first bowler in Test history to reach 500 wickets, finishing his career with 519 wickets in 132 Tests for the West Indies. His extensive knowledge of bowling techniques and leadership is expected to benefit Zimbabwe’s pace attack and overall bowling strategy in the T20 format.

Role focused on mentoring and strategy

In his new role, Walsh will work closely with Zimbabwe’s bowlers, sharpening their technical skills, tactical awareness, and consistency under pressure. Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni said the decision to bring in Walsh was aimed at strengthening the team’s technical depth and helping the bowling unit adapt to varied conditions they will encounter during the tournament.

Zimbabwe’s World Cup Group stage challenge

Zimbabwe has been drawn in Group B of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, alongside Australia, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Oman. The team will open its campaign against Oman on February 9 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo before facing Australia and other opponents in group fixtures. Top teams from the group will advance to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Walsh’s coaching credentials

Since retiring from international cricket, Walsh has taken up several coaching and consultancy roles. He has worked as head coach of the West Indies women’s team and served as a bowling coach for the Bangladesh men’s side. He also worked as a technical consultant with Zimbabwe’s women’s national team, giving him familiarity with Zimbabwean cricket setup and culture.

Walsh expressed excitement about his new assignment, noting that Zimbabwe has great potential if the team executes its plans well and adapts to match conditions.
