An investigating officer said that the incident of the victim being forcibly taken to the guard’s room has been captured in CCTV. This confirms the allegations made in the written complaint of the student.
The guard in whose room the rape took place was arrested on Saturday. Police said that he was arrested after interrogation. A total of four arrests have been made in the case so far.
Apart from this, a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed in the case. An Assistant Commissioner level officer is leading the SIT.
The incident took place in the guard room on the ground floor of the college on June 25. The main accused is Manojit Mishra (31). The accused are also involved in the incident – Jaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20). Manojit is a former student of the college, while Jaib and Pramit are students of the college.
The medical report also confirmed that the victim was raped
The medical report of the victim student confirmed rape on Saturday. The medical examination was done at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC). According to the police, the victim had marks of assault, bites and scratches on her body. It has also been confirmed that she was beaten up.
The police arrested two accused on June 26 and the third accused on Friday morning. The court has sent all three to police custody till July 1. Law college guard Pinaki Banerjee (55) was also arrested on Saturday.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee gave a controversial statement regarding the incident. Banerjee said- what can be done if a friend rapes his friend.
Manojit was hired due to shortage of staff
Law College Vice Principal Nayana Chatterjee told NDTV that the college administration came to know about the incident through the media. Neither the victim student nor anyone else made any complaint about the incident to the college administration.
He said that the police had asked for permission to enter the campus a day after the incident. The security guards were also asked not to be informed about this. The police have sealed two rooms on the ground floor. The vice principal also said that the guards were not performing their duties properly.
Chatterjee said that the main accused Manojit Mishra was appointed as a temporary faculty member a few months ago. The hiring was done due to the shortage of permanent staff.
TMC termed Kalyan Banerjee’s statement as personal
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has distanced itself from the controversial statement of MP Kalyan Banerjee on the incident. Banerjee had said on Friday- what can be done if a friend rapes his friend.
The party wrote in the post, ‘MP Kalyan Banerjee’s statements are his personal. This is not the party’s stand. The party has zero tolerance towards crimes against women and demands the strictest punishment for the culprits.’
If the main accused is one, then why is the case of gang rape…
Chief Police Prosecutor Sorin Ghoshal said that according to the Supreme Court’s decision, all persons who help in committing rape should be held responsible. In this case, two other persons helped in the rape. Therefore, this is a case of gang rape.
BJP’s allegation- one of the accused is associated with Trinamool
BJP leader Amit Malviya shared a Bengali news report on social media and wrote, ‘Shocking incident! A female law student was gang-raped in the college campus. The accused include a former student and two college staff. A person associated with Trinamool Congress is also involved in the case.’
On the other hand, TMC student wing chief Trinkur Bhattacharya said- We never said that Manojit Mishra was not associated with the TMC student wing. He was a junior member. There is no active unit of TMC student wing in the college.
Bengal government minister Shashi Panja said- The Aparajita Bill (death penalty for rape convicts) was passed in the West Bengal Assembly. It could not become a law till now because the BJP stopped it. A woman’s body is not a battlefield for your politics. It should be respected.
