Ludhiana:
Alleging snakebite as the cause of death of his wife, a grocer hastily cremated her body without waiting for her family to arrive from Bihar. However, after receiving a complaint from the victim’s parents, the police booked the grocer under charges of dowry death and arrested him.
The accused, Chandan Singh of Kanaich village in Sahnewal, claimed his wife, Sapna (27), had died from snakebite, but, he refused to send the body for postmortem despite being asked by her parents.
The FIR was filed based on the statement of Anil Kumar Singh, the victim’s father from Purnia, Bihar. He alleged that Chandan had been harassing Sapna for dowry, and she had confided in him about her suffering on multiple occasions. On September 18, he received a call from Chandan’s father, Hari Chandar Singh, informing him of Sapna’s death due to snakebite.
Anil Kumar Singh requested that the body be sent for postmortem and the cremation be delayed until the family arrived. However, Chandan proceeded with the cremation in a hurried manner, raising suspicions about his intent to conceal evidence.
Investigating Officer SI Harmeet Singh, who is leading the investigation, stated that the complainant accused Chandan of murdering his wife and deliberately rushing the cremation to destroy evidence. The police have booked him under charges of Sections 80 (dowry death) and 238 (tampering with evidence or providing false information) of the BNS and initiated further investigation to know the actual cause behind Sapna’s death.
The case is now under intense scrutiny, as the authorities examine whether the snakebite claim was a cover-up for foul play linked to dowry harassment.
