Jalandhar: In a major breakthrough, the Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested four individuals, including three women, for their alleged involvement in a ₹40,000 theft case at Punjab National Bank’s Mehatpur branch. This successful operation was part of a special campaign against societal evils and narcotics trafficking.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ananya, daughter of Surori Veeru, from Madhya Pradesh; Saloni, wife of Pradeep, from Madhya Pradesh; Bhavna, daughter of Nandkishore, from Rajasthan; and Devinder Sharma, son of Bhagshal Sharma, from Ludhiana district.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh provided details on the operation, emphasizing that special police teams, supervised by Gazetted rank officers, have been deployed across all sub-divisions of Jalandhar Rural to effectively combat street crime. The arrests followed a complaint lodged on August 27 by an elderly woman, Jasbir Kaur, who reported that ₹40,000 was stolen from her by an unknown woman at the bank premises. The suspect then fled in an auto-rickshaw.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police team led by SHO Mehatpur Police Station, Inspector Jaipal, under the supervision of Onkar Singh Brar, utilised CCTV footage from the bank and surrounding areas to trace the movements of the suspects. The police were able to follow the trail of the auto-rickshaw, leading them to the accused.
The case was registered on August 31 under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Mehatpur Police Station. The use of modern tracing methods, combined with the CCTV evidence, was instrumental in identifying and apprehending the culprits.
During the investigation, it was revealed that two of the accused had prior criminal records. Bhavna has three theft cases registered against her in two different districts, while Ananya has one theft case registered in Ludhiana.
The police have also seized the auto-rickshaw (PB10 FV 9474) used in the crime. The accused were produced before the court, and further investigation is underway to uncover any potential links to other crimes in the region.
