Ludhiana:

“Tussi sarpanchi di chon na lado, agar tussi sarpanchi di chon ladi taan tuhada hashar maada hovega (You should not contest the sarpanch election. If you do, you will face dire consequences),” said a caller while threatening a woman sarpanch candidate from Ludhiana.

The threat call is said to be made by a member of the notorious Davinder Bambiha gang, warning her to withdraw her nomination or face severe consequences.

The gang continues to operate despite its leader, Davinder Bambiha, being killed in a police encounter in 2016, with many members reportedly hiding abroad.

According to the woman sarpanch candidate Sukhdeep Kaur (41), who is contesting as an independent candidate from Tussa village of Sudhar block, the caller claimed to be the member of Bambiha Gang.

Kaur stated that she received a WhatsApp call from a number with a UK country code (+44) and the caller threatened her of dire consequences while asking her to withdraw her nomination.

Meanwhile, Kaur, who previously served as a panch member, lodged a complaint with the police and suspect that the threat may have been orchestrated by someone from her own village to intimidate her into withdrawing. However, she remains determined to contest the election.

After receiving the complaint, the police have initiated investigation into the matter and are trying to locate the location of the caller. The Sudhar police have registered an FIR under sections 319 (2) and 351 (3) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
