Jalandhar: In a five-year-old case, four out of five members of the Special Task Force (STF) of Punjab Police have been arrested. The allegation against the arrested police personnel is that, they falsely registered a case of possession of narcotics against a resident of Kapurthala five years ago.
It’s important to note that the accused police personnel had filed a First Information Report (FIR) under the NDPS Act against Kuldeep Singh, also known as Sonu, at Kapurthala City Police Station in 2019 for possessing heroin and poppy.
Sonu filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Last year, the court issued a judgment ordering action against 5 policemen. Following the court’s orders, an FIR was registered against them on December 21, 2023, at Kapurthala City Police Station under sections 58, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.
The arrested policemen include Assistant Sub-Inspector Sylvester Masih and constables Major Singh, Gurwinder Singh, and Sham Masih. Major Singh was arrested on Saturday, and the other 3 were arrested on Friday. The police have taken them on a 3-days remand.
The police officials said that the fifth accused Sub Inspector Kuldeep Singh has not been arrested yet. On September 23, 2019, Sylvester lodged an FIR against Sonu, a resident of Mohalla Mulkana in Kapurthala. It is being told that Sonu was arrested after 20 grams of heroin and 250 grams of poppy were recovered from him. STF members alleged that Sonu dropped 2 polybags filled with banned substances from his pant pocket. Later, 2 more youths were named in the case.
On 16 April 2020, the police put the challan in the court. Sonu filed a writ petition in the High Court against challan and challenged that the case was false. He also presented CCTV footage of his service station, in which policemen had come to him a few hours before the FIR was registered.
