In a shocking incident that took place on Sunday, the Assam Police on Monday arrested a woman and her lover for the murder of her 10-year-old son, whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase in Guwahati.

The victim, identified as Mrinmoy Barman, was a Class 5 student of Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya. His body was discovered by a local scrap collector along a deserted stretch of road near the Forest Department office.

Following initial suspicion, the police detained the boy’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, and her lover, Jyotimoy Haloi. During interrogation, the two confessed to murdering the child.

“Dipali, who works at a clinic, had initially claimed that her son had gone missing and even lodged a complaint with the police. However, inconsistencies in her statements raised suspicions,” said a police official.

“Our investigation revealed that she had filed for divorce from her husband, Bikash Barman, two months ago and was in a relationship with Jyotimoy Haloi, a temporary peon at the Accountant General’s office,” the official added.

The official further said that both accused had conspired to kill the child and carried out the act in a “gruesome manner”. “Dipali is currently in our custody,” police said.

The authorities also recovered the child’s schoolbag from the crime scene. Both accused were taken to the location for a reconstruction of the sequence of events. A magistrate visited the spot and inspected the recovered body parts.
