Havana: A series of earthquakes struck Cuba and Iran within hours of each other, just a day after a major seismic event in the Philippines that reportedly killed dozens of people, according to official and media reports.

Update: Shaking has been felt across much of Florida in the aftermath of the 6.1 magnitude quake just west of Cuba.

Strong 6.1 Earthquake Rocks Cuba and Surrounding Regions

A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit off the northwestern coast of Cuba, with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reporting a shallow depth of around 10–26 km and an epicenter located approximately 104 km west-northwest of Mantua. The tremor was widely felt across Cuba, Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and parts of Florida in the United States, including Miami and areas north up to Orlando.

Authorities in Florida and Mexico reported strong shaking that prompted precautionary evacuations in some locations, including buildings in Miami-Dade County and temporary disruption of commuter rail services. Social media reports also indicated noticeable tremors across tourist regions such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. However, officials confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued and no major damage or casualties were reported.

The Cuban earthquake has been described as the strongest to hit the region in around 150 years, highlighting its unusual intensity for an area not typically known for major seismic activity.

Evacuations and Disruptions Triggered in Florida and Mexico

In response to the shaking, authorities carried out precautionary evacuations in parts of Miami-Dade County, including government buildings. Commuter rail operations in the downtown Miami corridor were temporarily suspended as a safety measure.

In Mexico, tourists and residents in coastal hubs such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum rushed outdoors as buildings swayed. Despite the alarm, no structural damage or injuries were reported in these regions.

Iran Records Separate 5.0 Magnitude Quake Hours Later

Within hours, a separate magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Sargaz region of Iran’s Hormozgan province, at a depth of about 22 km, according to Iranian state media. The tremor was felt locally but no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.

No Geological Link Between the Two Events

Although the earthquakes occurred close together in time, experts emphasize they are not geologically connected, and the timing is considered coincidental. Authorities in both regions continue to monitor for aftershocks, while emergency agencies have not reported any major secondary impacts at this stage.
