    CWG 2026: Preeti Pawar Wins India’s First Boxing Gold Medal at Glasgow Games

    Glasgow: Indian boxer Preeti Pawar scripted history on Saturday by winning the country’s first boxing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after defeating Canada’s Scarlett Delgado in the women’s 54kg final at Glasgow.

    Pawar delivered a confident performance throughout the bout and secured victory by unanimous decision, marking a major achievement for Indian boxing at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

    Preeti Pawar Dominates Final Against Canada’s Delgado

    The Indian boxer began the contest cautiously as Delgado landed some early punches. However, Pawar remained composed, gradually found her rhythm, and responded with accurate combinations and effective left hooks.

    The judges awarded the opening round to Pawar with a 5-0 unanimous scoreline.

    In the second round, Pawar increased the pressure and took control of the bout with sharper punches and cleaner combinations. Her attacking display forced a standing count for Delgado, helping her secure another 5-0 round victory.

    Indian Boxer Seals Historic Gold Medal

    With the gold medal within reach, Pawar maintained her dominance in the final round. She controlled the pace of the fight and continued to land effective punches, including a strong left hook and right-hand combinations.

    After the final bell, the judges unanimously declared Pawar the winner, handing India its first boxing gold medal of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.

    India Eyes More Medals Across Events

    Apart from boxing, Indian athletes are also competing for medals across multiple disciplines at CWG 2026.

    In athletics, Gulveer Singh will compete in the men’s 5000m final after winning silver in the 10,000m event. Triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran will also aim for podium finishes.

    India’s mixed 4x400m relay team, pole vaulters Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar, and race walker Priyanka Goswami are among other athletes looking to add medals to India’s tally.

    The country will also continue its strong campaign in judo, bowls, para athletics and track cycling events at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
