CWG 2026: Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver in Women’s 53kg Weightlifting, Extends India’s Medal Surge

Glasgow: India’s impressive run in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Monday as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched the silver medal in the women’s 53kg category. With her podium finish, India has now secured four consecutive medals in weightlifting at the Games.

Gyaneshwari finished with a combined lift of 199kg, recording 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih claimed the gold medal with a total of 206kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx settled for bronze with 178kg.

Strong Performance Secures Silver

The 23-year-old lifter opened her campaign confidently, successfully lifting 82kg, 85kg, and 88kg in the snatch event. Despite her flawless attempts, she trailed Didih, who topped the standings after lifting 93kg.

In the clean and jerk section, Gyaneshwari made an impressive start with a 103kg lift, briefly moving to the top of the leaderboard. She followed it up with 107kg before successfully completing her final lift to finish with a 199kg total, securing the silver medal.

Didih maintained her lead by registering a successful 110kg clean and jerk, sealing the gold medal.

India’s Weightlifting Campaign Gains Momentum

Gyaneshwari became the fourth Indian weightlifter to win a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Rishikanta Singh (silver), Mirabai Chanu (gold), and Raja Muthupandi (silver). Her medal further strengthens India’s impressive start in the weightlifting competition.

Rising Star from Chhattisgarh

Hailing from Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, Gyaneshwari is regarded as one of India’s brightest young weightlifting talents. She first gained international recognition by winning three silver medals at the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships in Greece in the 49kg category.

Earlier this year, she also claimed a silver medal in the snatch and an overall bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships, earning her place in India’s Commonwealth Games squad. Her latest silver medal in Glasgow marks another significant milestone in her rapidly rising international career.
