Uttar Pradesh: At least 10 people died and dozens more drowned and feared missing after an overloaded boat capsized in the Yamuna River in northern India on Thursday morning, according to police.
Overloaded Boat Carrying Farmers Overturns
The incident occurred near Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh while the boat was ferrying farmers, reported Reuters.
Initial reports indicated that between 40 and 60 people were on board when the vessel capsized, far exceeding its capacity. Authorities estimate that between 10 and 31 passengers are still missing.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The boat, which had a capacity of 35 passengers, overturned mid-river, said district magistrate Bhawani Singh. The incident is currently under investigation.
At least 10 people managed to swim to safety, while 19 bodies have been recovered from the river so far, according to senior police officer Ram Kumar.
Rescue teams are continuing search operations to trace the missing passengers.
Safety Concerns Highlighted
Such accidents remain common in India due to poorly built and overcrowded ferries, along with limited enforcement of safety regulations. The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns over passenger safety and monitoring of local transport systems.
