Decision on Sanitation Crisis in Haryana Today; Government Submits Proposal, Workers Call Meeting

The ongoing strike by sanitation workers and fire brigade personnel in Haryana may come to an end today. On Wednesday, a meeting lasting nearly six hours was held at Haryana Niwas between Municipal Administration Minister Vipul Goel, along with officials from the CMO and the Urban Local Bodies Department, and representatives of the Municipal Employees Union and the Fire Brigade Employees Union.

According to sources, a consensus has been reached on most of the employees’ demands during the meeting. Employee leaders are expected to take a final decision after consulting with their colleagues. Indications suggest that the strike is likely to be called off.

The government has sought time until June 30 to fulfill the demands of the fire brigade employees, and until May 20 to resolve the demands of the municipal employees. This information was provided by the Municipal Employees Union.

Municipal employees have been on strike since May 1, while fire brigade personnel have been striking since April 8. Naresh Shastri, the state president of the union, stated that the next course of action would be announced on Thursday, following consultations with all the employees. It is worth noting that, due to the sanitation workers’ strike, approximately 14,000 tons of garbage are accumulating on the streets across the state every day. Consequently, the public is facing significant inconvenience.

Public Interest Litigation in High Court; Hearing Today

The issue of the garbage crisis resulting from the indefinite strike by sanitation workers in Haryana has reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Court is scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Gokul Setia, the Congress MLA from Sirsa, today.

The petition asserts that the piling up of garbage in cities has heightened the risk of foul odors and infections, thereby infringing upon the citizens’ fundamental right to a clean environment.

The petition seeks the issuance of necessary directives from the Court to resolve this crisis.
