‘Haryana Wins Medals, Gujarat Gets Games’: Deepender Hooda Questions 2030 Commonwealth Games Host Choice

New Delhi: Congress Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda on Tuesday questioned the Centre’s decision to award the hosting rights of the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, saying Haryana’s outstanding contribution to Indian sports deserved equal recognition.

Hooda remarked, “Haryana wins medals, Gujarat gets the Games,” highlighting that athletes from Haryana have consistently contributed a major share of India’s medals at international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, Olympics and Asian Games.

Hooda Seeks Recognition for Haryana’s Sporting Contribution

The Congress leader said Haryana has emerged as one of India’s strongest sporting states, producing several Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallists across disciplines such as wrestling, boxing, athletics and shooting.

He questioned why Haryana was not considered to host or co-host the 2030 Commonwealth Games despite its sporting achievements and infrastructure.

Hooda urged the Central government and sports authorities to recognise Haryana’s contribution by involving the state in hosting the Games, saying it would be a fitting tribute to the athletes who have consistently brought glory to the country.

Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

The comments came after Ahmedabad was chosen as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the return of the event to India after the 2010 New Delhi edition.

Hooda clarified that his remarks were intended to draw attention to Haryana’s contribution to Indian sports rather than diminish Gujarat’s selection. He said states that consistently produce international medal winners should also receive opportunities to host major sporting events.

His statement has triggered a political debate, with the BJP and Congress exchanging views over the selection of Gujarat as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
