Delhi Assembly seeks forensic report on Atishi video by Jan 22

The Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has formally requested the Punjab government to submit the forensic report on a controversial video clip involving Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi by January 22, 2026. The request relates to a video from Assembly proceedings that allegedly showed Atishi using objectionable words about a Sikh Guru.

Details of the request to Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory

In a letter sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in SAS Nagar (Mohali), the Assembly Secretariat enclosed a press statement issued by the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate. The statement noted that a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed concerning a video clip dated January 6, 2026, from the Delhi Assembly proceedings. The police statement also said the video was examined and found to be deliberately doctored.

The Secretariat has asked the Punjab government to submit a written response along with the full forensic records — including the application and the report issued by the FSL — on or before January 22.

    Speaker highlights gravity of issue

Addressing reporters, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta stated that the matter is serious due to concerns over the dignity of the Legislative Assembly and democratic accountability. Gupta hinted that, if necessary, a special session of the House could be called to deal with the situation, as all decisions on the matter must be taken by the Assembly itself.

    Privilege proceedings initiated

The Assembly Speaker also noted that the Committee on Privileges has been asked to examine the issue. A notice has been issued to Atishi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the House, regarding an alleged breach of privilege. Atishi has been asked to provide a written reply by January 19.

    Background to the controversy

The row began with a video clip from the Delhi Assembly winter session that went viral on social media, falsely suggesting Atishi made derogatory remarks about a Sikh Guru. The clip, which was shared widely by political actors and supporters, sparked public outrage and protests, particularly in Punjab. Subsequent forensic analysis in Punjab reportedly found that the video had been manipulated and that Atishi did not use the contentious word.

    Political tensions and legal action

The doctored video has led to an FIR and a court order directing social media platforms to remove the clip to prevent disturbance of public order and religious harmony. The controversy has intensified political confrontation between the AAP and opposition parties, with calls for clarification, apologies, and further legal scrutiny.
