The Delhi Legislative Assembly’s winter session commenced on January 5, 2026, setting the stage for intense political debates over the city’s deteriorating air quality and the tabling of controversial CAG reports. The four-day session, scheduled until January 8, is expected to witness heated discussions between the ruling BJP-led government and the Opposition AAP.
Ahead of proceedings, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta urged all legislators both from the ruling party and opposition to engage positively and responsibly on critical issues affecting Delhi. She emphasized that the Assembly should act as a forum to address public concerns and influence policy making.
The capital continues to battle severe air pollution, with high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels affecting public health. Opposition MLAs, led by Atishi, arrived at the Assembly wearing face masks to highlight citizens’ struggle with smog and to draw attention to what they term ineffective pollution control measures. Atishi accused the government of manipulating AQI monitors and failing to implement pollution mitigation strategies.
A major point of contention in the session revolves around the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, which include audits related to the “Sheesh Mahal” bungalow, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and other government sectors. Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht confirmed that these reports will be tabled and debated starting Tuesday, underscoring the BJP’s focus on alleged irregularities during previous administrations.
While the government champions transparency and accountability through these reports, the Opposition has stressed that urgent action on pollution relief measures should take precedence. Atishi and other opposition members have insisted that the Assembly prioritize the ongoing public health crisis caused by hazardous air quality.
With discussions on pollution policy, CAG findings, and broader governance issues, the winter session is poised to be politically charged. Both sides are expected to use these debates to reinforce their respective positions ahead of future electoral contests.
