Delhi Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to 6, Search and Rescue Operations Underway

New Delhi: The death toll in the Delhi building collapse has risen to six, while 11 people have been rescued and several others are still feared trapped under the debris, officials said on Monday.

The multi-storey building in Satya Niketan collapsed on Sunday afternoon, triggering a massive search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies. Rescue teams continued operations through the night as officials searched the debris for survivors.

One more person rescued, found dead

According to rescue officials, one more person was pulled out during the overnight operation but was found dead. Several people, mostly students, are still feared to be trapped inside the collapsed structure.

Teams from the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Disaster Management Authority are carrying out the rescue operation.

Officials are working to clear the debris carefully to locate those who may still be trapped inside.

FIR against building owner

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse of the boys’ paying guest accommodation after inspecting the site on Sunday.

She also directed officials to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse and ordered an FIR against the building owner.

Gupta said those responsible for the incident would face strict legal action.

Police said an FIR has been registered at South Campus police station against alleged owner Hariram and others. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel confirmed the registration of the case.

Building housed students

According to police, the building was around 40–50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students, many of whom were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus.

The premises reportedly had accommodation for around 40 people.

The collapse took place at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday when repair work was reportedly underway in the basement. Officials have also indicated that heavy rains may have contributed to the incident.
