Delhi Drowning Tragedy: Six Minors Feared Dead in Two Separate Incidents in Outer Delhi

New Delhi: Six minor boys are feared dead after two separate drowning incidents were reported in Outer Delhi, officials said on Monday. Four children went missing after being swept away by strong currents in the Yamuna River, while two other minors allegedly drowned in a rainwater-filled excavation pit in Mukhmelpur village.

Rescue teams recovered the bodies of two boys from the Yamuna, while the search operation for the remaining two children continued. In the second incident, two boys aged eight and ten were declared dead after being pulled out from a water-filled pit.

Four Children Swept Away in Yamuna; Rescue Operation Underway

The first incident occurred near Thokar No. 24 in Hiranki village, under the jurisdiction of Alipur Police Station in Outer North Delhi, where four children were reportedly swept away while bathing in the Yamuna River.

Soon after receiving information, a joint rescue operation was launched by the Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies.

After several hours of searching, rescue teams recovered the bodies of two boys from the river. The operation continued until around 10:30 pm but was suspended due to darkness and poor visibility.

Authorities have sealed the area and warned residents against entering the Yamuna, stating that the river’s water level remains high and strong currents pose a serious danger.

Two Boys Drown in Rainwater-Filled Pit in Mukhmelpur

In another incident near Hiranki Road in Mukhmelpur village, two minor boys, aged eight and ten years, drowned after falling into a rainwater-filled excavation pit.

Police received information about the incident at 6:08 pm, while the Delhi Fire Service was alerted at 5:55 pm.

Local residents rescued the children from the pit and rushed them to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra (SRHC) Hospital in Narela, where doctors declared both boys brought dead.

According to the preliminary investigation, the children had gone to play in agricultural fields behind a house around 4 pm when they accidentally fell into the pit, which had been created to collect excess rainwater from nearby fields.

Police Register FIR, Probe Negligence Angle

Police said the excavation pit was being used for drainage and temporary storage of rainwater but appeared to have lacked proper safety measures, creating a danger for children in the area.

The eight-year-old victim was a resident of Uttarakhand Colony and the son of a driver. The 10-year-old boy lived in Haiderpur and was staying with his uncle after the death of his father.

The bodies of both children have been shifted to the mortuary at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

An FIR has been registered under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to causing death by negligence. Officials said further investigation is underway to determine responsibility for maintaining the rainwater-filled excavation pit.

Authorities have urged people, especially parents, to remain cautious during the monsoon season and keep children away from flooded areas, rivers and unsecured water bodies.
