Delhi HC demands answers from Centre as IndiGo flight crisis deepens

New Delhi: The government has asked IndiGo to cut its flight schedule by 10%, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Tuesday. The step aims to stabilise airline operations amid ongoing disruptions affecting thousands of passengers.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also asked IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers to submit a detailed report on the disruptions and current operational status by Wednesday evening.

Delhi High Court Questions Centre on Aviation Crisis

Amid the widespread cancellations, the Delhi High Court has sought an explanation from the central government on how the situation escalated into what it called a full-blown “crisis”.

The court noted that the disruption goes beyond passenger inconvenience and has broader implications, including potential economic consequences.

IndiGo’s Route Monopoly Raises Concerns

Industry data shows IndiGo’s dominant position in the domestic aviation network. The airline operates over 950 of the roughly 1,200 domestic routes flown by Indian carriers.

Of these routes:

• Nearly 600 (63%) are monopoly routes, where IndiGo has no competition.
• Around 200 (21%) are duopoly routes, with only one competing airline, according to data analysed by aviation expert and former network planner Ameya Joshi.
