Delhi High Court Grants Bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar in 2017 Unnao Rape Case

Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar suspended his life sentence pending the hearing of his appeal.

Bail Conditions and Restrictions

The court ordered that Sengar remain in Delhi and report to the police every Monday. He is prohibited from entering within a 5-kilometer radius of the victim. The court warned that violation of these conditions may result in the cancellation of bail.

Background of the Case

Sengar was convicted of raping a 17-year-old minor in June 2017. The victim was allegedly kidnapped, harassed, and sold for ₹60,000 before being rescued from the Makhi police station. The trial court sentenced Sengar to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹2.5 million. His appeal is currently pending.

Controversial events and legal representation

The case became more controversial when a lorry without a license plate collided with the victim’s car, seriously injuring the victim and her lawyer and killing two of her aunts. A separate case was filed against Sengar, but he was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Anubha Bharadwaj and other lawyers appeared for the CBI, while his team of lawyers, including senior advocates N. Hariharan and Manish Vashisht, represented Sengar. Lawyers representing the complainant and the Delhi Commission for Women also appeared in court.
