Delhi L-G TS Sandhu Lays Foundation Stone of Modern Dog Shelter in Dwarka

New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) modern dog shelter in Dwarka, aimed at providing safe shelter, sterilisation and vaccination facilities for stray canines.

The facility, located at Sector-29, Dwarka, will be developed over an area of approximately 6,050 square metres with modern infrastructure focused on animal care, rehabilitation and welfare.

Modern Facility to Provide Care for Stray Dogs

Sharing details of the project, Sandhu said the shelter will provide a safe environment for stray dogs and support initiatives related to their healthcare and rehabilitation.

He also visited Delhi’s only cremation centre for small animals and advised the MCD to involve animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, dog lovers and experts to ensure sustainable and compassionate implementation of such projects.

Project Developed Through Public-Private Partnership

The Lieutenant Governor said the dog shelter is being developed through a public-private partnership model, with support from the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation’s CSR initiative, allowing the project to be executed at no cost to the MCD.

Delhi is estimated to have around 8 lakh to 10 lakh stray dogs, while the city reports more than 25,000 dog bite cases annually at various hospitals.

L-G Reviews Aerocity Development Plans

Later, Sandhu reviewed ongoing development activities at Aerocity near Delhi airport and received a briefing from GMR officials on infrastructure projects, including sustainable urban planning, water conservation, traffic management and last-mile Metro connectivity.

He stressed the need for coordination with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and directed that green infrastructure and sustainability remain key priorities in future development plans.
