New Delhi: The weather across the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) has taken a sharp and unexpected turn, bringing with it intense heatwave conditions more typical of May and June, even as April draws to a close.

After experiencing relatively mild and pleasant weather in March, reminiscent of February’s lingering chill, residents are now grappling with soaring temperatures and deteriorating air quality.

IMD Issues Heatwave Alert Till April 24

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a continuous heatwave alert has been issued from April 21 to April 24. On April 21, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 41 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 23 degrees.

The situation is expected to worsen over the next few days, with temperatures likely to rise further. The maximum temperature may touch 43 degrees Celsius on April 22 and 23, with similar conditions expected on April 24.

Heatwave Likely to Continue Into Evening Hours

The IMD has also warned that heatwave conditions are likely to persist not only during the afternoon but extend into the evening hours, indicating the severity of the ongoing weather pattern.

A slight improvement is expected around April 25 and 26, when temperatures may marginally dip to around 41 degrees Celsius. However, officials have clarified that relief will remain minimal, with partly cloudy skies expected but no major weather change.

Air Quality Continues to Remain in ‘Poor’ Category

Alongside extreme heat, air quality across the NCR remains a major concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas of Delhi and neighbouring regions continues to stay in the ‘poor’ category.

In Delhi, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 224, while Ashok Vihar stood at 173. Other areas such as Bawana, Chandni Chowk, and Noida sectors also reported consistently poor air quality levels.

Ghaziabad Records ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality

In Ghaziabad, the Loni area recorded an AQI of 301, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category. Other localities like Vasundhara, Sanjay Nagar, and Indirapuram also reported unhealthy air conditions.

Health Advisory Issued for Residents

The combination of extreme heat and polluted air has created a double burden for residents across NCR. Health experts have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and use protective masks to reduce exposure to pollution and heat stress.
