New Delhi: Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed continuous rainfall on Friday, bringing relief from heat and humidity but also causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the region.

The southwest monsoon became active again over the national capital and nearby areas after days of warm and humid conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR as heavy showers continue to affect the region.

Waterlogging reported in Delhi and Noida

Continuous rainfall led to water accumulation in several areas, including Durga Vihar in South Delhi, while heavy showers also caused flooding on Deoli Road.

In neighbouring Noida, Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall resulted in severe waterlogging at the Sector 95 underpass, where an ambulance was reportedly stranded in deep water beneath the Mahamaya Flyover.

Traffic movement affected across major routes

The heavy downpour disrupted traffic movement on several important roads across Delhi.

Traffic congestion was reported on routes including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar stretch, Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.

Several areas in east Delhi, including GT Road, GTB Enclave and Dilshad Garden, also witnessed traffic slowdowns.

Social media users shared visuals of waterlogging from localities such as Dakshinpuri, Okhla, Sangam Vihar, Sainik Farms and parts of Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.

IMD warns of more heavy rainfall

The IMD said the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall is due to a combination of multiple weather systems active over northern India.

The weather department cautioned that intense monsoon showers could lead to further waterlogging, traffic disruptions and localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

According to the IMD forecast, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to stay between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. Surface winds are expected at speeds of 10-15 kmph.

The IMD has advised residents of Delhi-NCR to remain cautious while travelling and avoid waterlogged areas as heavy rainfall continues.
