New electric vehicle policy approved in Delhi

The Delhi government on Monday approved a new electric vehicle (EV) policy under which all electric cars with an ex-showroom price of Rs 30 lakh or less in Delhi will be given 100 percent exemption in road tax and registration fees. Under the new policy, people buying two-wheelers will get a subsidy of Rs 30,000 in the first year, Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year. Under the policy, only electric autorickshaws will be registered in Delhi from January 1, 2027. Registration of petrol, diesel and CNG twowheelers will be phased out.

From April 1, 2028, only electric two-wheelers will be registered. For now, petrol and diesel vehicles will continue to ply without restrictions. During its tenure, the Delhi government has taken steps towards realizing the dream of using only electric two-wheelers. The government wants petrol and diesel vehicles to gradually disappear from Delhi’s roads.

The Delhi government has declared its policy that from 2028, if any new two-wheeler is registered in Delhi, it will only be electric. As far as pollution control is concerned, we can welcome this decision, but the question is how will the bell be tied? Vehicles on the roads are mostly diesel-powered, and the government desires that new two-wheelers will now run exclusively on electricity. But does the government have enough electricity to enable us to electrify vehicles, navigate the digital and robotic era, and support the miraculous inventions of artificial intelligence? In our own opinion, such an environment has not yet been created in India.
