Delhi Police Cite Barricade Breach as Multiple FIRs Are Filed Over Opposition Protest

New Delhi: Delhi Police has filed several FIRs in connection with the opposition’s protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. According to Delhi Police, these FIRs have been registered at the Barakhamba Road and Tilak Marg police stations. According to the police, the cases relate to allegations of allegedly breaking barricades and writing slogans on the streets during the protest.

On Monday, leaders and supporters of the INDIA alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi, marched from Barakhamba Road towards the Supreme Court. Following this, 11 opposition leaders filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s decisions related to SIR.

14 flaws in Rahul Gandhi’s petition, Supreme Court Registry raises questions

The Supreme Court Registry has pointed out 14 flaws in the petition filed by Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and nine other leaders of the INDIA alliance. The petition challenges the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls issued by the Election Commission.

The petitioners include Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, CPI(M) MP M.A. Baby, CPI leader D. Raja, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Maji, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, and Indian Union Muslim League MP E.T. Mohammed Basheer.

Explanation sought on making the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners parties

The Registry has also asked the petitioners to explain why they have made Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and two Election Commissioners, S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, respondents in the petition.

This objection has been raised in the context of a petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution. The petitioners allege that the Election Commission committed certain irregularities in the exercise of its powers during the SIR. They have sought other reliefs, including an investigation into the decisions related to the voter list amendments and the manner in which they were implemented.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, invited opposition MPs to a high tea at his residence on Tuesday. This invitation comes a day after the leaders and supporters of the INDIA alliance marched to the Supreme Court against the SIR on Monday.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi thanked the opposition leaders for their support in the protest march and assured them that their struggle will continue.

Rahul Gandhi said, “We had to show the government that the people of India will not be intimidated. You cannot beat us, threaten us, or intimidate us. We will not bow down to pressure.”
