New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been summoned by the Delhi Police on Thursday for questioning in connection with the Jantar Mantar protest. Both leaders have been asked to appear at the Delhi Police Crime Branch office in Rajouri Garden at 12 noon.
Delhi Police had previously summoned Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka for questioning in October. However, the two leaders did not appear at that time and later sought additional time to appear before the Crime Branch.
The cases related to the protest registered against the CJP leaders were transferred to the Crime Branch in October.
Protest at Jantar Mantar on October 13
The case relates to an incident on October 13, when Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde, along with 11 others, allegedly entered Jantar Mantar without permission. Jantar Mantar was not notified as a designated protest site at the time.
Delhi Police detained all of them. Shinde was released on bail, while Das and Ranka remained in judicial custody for a week.
CJP members were protesting against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. They also raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Released from Tihar Jail on October 21
Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released from Tihar Jail on October 21 after a week of judicial custody. Both had given written assurances to the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) that they would maintain peace and not call for protests at Jantar Mantar until it was re-notified in accordance with the law.
Special Executive Magistrate Ritu Raj ordered the release of both activists upon furnishing personal bonds of βΉ50,000 each and surety bonds of the same amount. These bonds will remain in effect until the investigation into the alleged encroachment at Jantar Mantar is completed.
Written assurance given to maintain peace
In their written assurances, both activists promised not to disturb the peace. They also expressed full confidence in the judiciary and all its institutions, including the SEM court.
The SEM court held that the immediate steps required to prevent a breach of the peace or disruption of public order under Section 135(3) of the Indian Civil Service Code (BNSS) could be adequately ensured through bonds and written assurances.
