CJP Protest 2.0: Mamata, Kejriwal among Oppn leaders detained amid protests against CEC

New Delhi: Several opposition leaders, including former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, AAP national convener and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, were on Saturday detained by the police while attempting to join the protest, called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital, against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Mamata Banerjee was detained along with several MPs of the All India Trinamool Congress (Mamata faction) from South Avenue in central Delhi, where she sat in protest at a bus stand after being stopped by police.

Banerjee and five of her party MPs, including Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen, were detained and taken away in a police bus. The former West Bengal CM sat with a band-aid on her mouth during the protest.

“The government is misbehaving with us,” Banerjee said in a video statement from inside the police bus, adding, “We, the INDIA bloc, will continue to fight to strengthen people’s voice.”

Arvind Kejriwal, whose residence had been surrounded by Delhi Police since morning, was also detained as soon as he tried to step out to join the protest.

Speaking to reporters before being detained, Kejriwal said, “…There are police personnel and paramilitary forces everywhere. People are not being allowed to leave their homes…The police are picking people up as they walk on the streets. No one is being allowed to go anywhere. They have created an atmosphere of authoritarianism across the country. Why?… They want to suppress this issue of ‘vote chori’ and continue doing it. But the people of this country will not allow this to happen.”

“The youth of the country have risen. Today, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurabh Das, along with Dhruv Rathee, Ratna Singh and others, have been detained. The youth of the country are very angry. I request people to come to Delhi however they can to stop this vote chori; otherwise this country and this democracy won’t be saved.”

Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI-M MP John Brittas were among those detained by police and taken to the detention centre at Chhatrasal Stadium.

CPI-M General Secretary M.A. Baby was also detained.

Earlier in the day, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by the police from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi while on their way to Jantar Mantar to stage a protest, demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Anish Gawande Questions Police Action After CJP Leaders Detained From Plane at IGI Airport

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) spokesperson Anish Gawande questioned the police action against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and other party leaders, who were detained from inside an aircraft after it landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport ahead of the proposed Jantar Mantar protest.

Speaking at the airport, Gawande said the plans of the protesters would be revealed soon and that young people were continuing to make their way towards Jantar Mantar. He appealed to the police not to use excessive force and urged authorities to treat young protesters as equal citizens rather than criminals.

“The plan will be revealed to you very soon. Currently, young people are making their way to Jantar Mantar. We hope that the Police will not use excessive violence or force. We hope that the Police will treat young people of this country as equal citizens, rather than criminals who deserve to be punished,” Gawande said.

Anish Gawande Recounts Detention of Abhijeet Dipke

Speaking about the detention of Dipke, Gawande said they were travelling on the same flight and that the CJP founder and the other leaders were seated directly in front of him.

“We were all on the same flight. The three of them were sitting right in front of me. Police officers entered the aircraft, inconvenienced all other passengers and picked him up from the aircraft,” he said.

Gawande added that he did not know whether Dipke had been taken out of the airport or was still there at the time of his remarks.

Delhi Police personnel entered the aircraft shortly after it landed and detained Dipke along with CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. Videos from inside the flight showed an exchange between the leaders and police personnel as the officers approached them.

Dipke was heard telling the police to arrest him, saying that he had come to Delhi prepared to face arrest. Police personnel responded that it was not an arrest and asked him to cooperate.

CJP Alleges Detention of Legal Affairs Head, Policy Lead

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has alleged that Delhi Police detained its legal affairs head and policy lead amid the ongoing protest-related developments in the national capital.

In a social media post, CJP claimed that its legal affairs head, @whattalawyer, was being held inside a car surrounded by around 35 police personnel and a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). The party alleged that she was not being allowed to leave and that the police were taking her towards the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court.

In a separate claim, CJP said its policy lead, Mehr Pasr (@mehrpasr), had also been detained by Delhi Police. The party said Pasr had returned to India after studying at Harvard University to serve the country and criticised the police action against its members.

The party described the reported detentions as illegal and questioned the treatment of young people amid the protest. The allegations were made by CJP on social media; an official response from Delhi Police was not included in the information available.

YouTuber and social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Gurugram on Saturday, October 10, ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

According to media reports, Rathee was taken into custody from his residence in Sector 56, Gurugram, as authorities tightened security ahead of the planned demonstration. The protest has been called over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with organisers demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The reported detention comes amid heightened security arrangements across Delhi and neighbouring areas, with police stepping up surveillance and restricting movement in several locations ahead of the protest.

Abhijeet Dipke Questions Security Restrictions Ahead of CJP Protest

“I wonder why the Prime Minister of this country is so afraid of the nation’s youth and its people. What was the need to shut down all railway services? What was the need to halt all metro operations? They have cut off the internet and blocked the roads. They have brought the Army from J&K and deployed it in Delhi. They have summoned CRPF forces from Naxal-affected areas and deployed them in Delhi,” Dipke said.

He also questioned the deployment of security personnel ahead of the protest and referred to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

“Do Narendra Modi and Amit Shah want to wage war against the people of their own country? Is Gyanesh Kumar so dear to them that they would unleash their police and army forces upon their own citizens?” he added.

CJP Founder Calls Protest a Fundamental Democratic Right

Dipke further alleged that people were being prevented from joining the demonstration through detentions, warnings and visits by police personnel to residential areas.

“PM Modi is afraid; he fears that the people of this country will not vote for him after this. That is why, simply to cling to power, they are picking people up from trains. Announcements are being made in societies warning people not to join the protests. The Delhi Police is visiting homes, telling people not to participate in protests. But why shouldn’t we?” he said.

Defending the planned demonstration, Dipke said peaceful protest was a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution.

“Article 19 grants us the fundamental right to protest in a democratic and peaceful manner, and that is exactly what we intend to do,” he added.

Dipke Says He Is Ready for Detention or Arrest

When asked whether he could be arrested upon reaching Delhi airport, the CJP founder said he was prepared to face detention or arrest.

“If they want to detain or arrest me, let them go ahead. I am ready for it; let them arrest or detain me. It makes no difference to me. Invoke the UAPA, invoke the NSA—go ahead and do it. But we will keep fighting for free and fair elections and to save this country’s democracy,” Dipke said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police detained several protesters who had started gathering at Jantar Mantar ahead of the CJP demonstration. Security arrangements remained tightened across parts of the national capital as authorities prepared to manage the protest.
