New Delhi: Delhi Police carried out a verification drive targeting illegal immigrants at Jai Hindi Camp in the Vasant Kunj area of the national capital.

Sub-Inspector Ravi Malik, speaking to media, explained that during the drive, police officers asked individuals for their identity proofs for verification. He added that if anyone appeared suspicious, their documents were sent to their respective districts for further verification. “We ask for all their ID proofs to verify their identity. If anyone is found suspicious, their ID proofs are sent to the relevant districts for confirmation. If someone is living here illegally, they are deported,” Malik said.

This drive follows a similar operation on March 6, when Delhi Police conducted a verification exercise to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the Sangam Vihar area. In January, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena instructed the police to carry out a special mission to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the city.

A resident of Sangam Vihar shared with ANI that police asked her about when she moved to the area and checked her Aadhar card. “I am from Kolkata and have lived in Delhi for the past year. The police asked me when I moved here and checked my Aadhar card,” she said.

Earlier this week, senior Delhi Police officials met to discuss intensifying efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The Lieutenant Governor also directed the police to launch an awareness campaign through print and social media, encouraging people to verify the background of employees, domestic workers, and construction laborers for security reasons.

The LG’s directive also mentioned that Resident Welfare Associations and Shopkeeper Associations should be informed about the importance of antecedent verification before employing workers. Legal action will be taken against employers who provide accommodation or employment to illegal immigrants without proper verification.

In February, Delhi Police detained 16 individuals suspected of staying illegally in India after overstaying their visas. These individuals were presented before the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which ordered their deportation. They were subsequently sent to a Detention Centre.
