New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered more than 20 First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with attempts to stage protests forcibly in the national capital, officials said on Sunday, October 11. The cases relate to alleged offences including taking the law into one’s own hands, obstructing official duties and assaulting police personnel during demonstrations around Jantar Mantar.
The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The demonstrations took place amid heightened security in Delhi after authorities denied permission for the planned gathering.
CJP Leaders Released After Preventive Arrest
In a related development, an Executive Magistrate on Sunday ordered the release of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, according to Ratna Singh, the party’s head of legal affairs.
The three leaders were detained on Saturday at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving in Delhi to participate in the planned protest against the Election Commission of India.
Before their release, Singh had said the leaders were scheduled to appear before the Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantt Police Station at 9 am on Sunday. She also said she would be present at the police station with other lawyers representing the party.
Their release came a day after the preventive arrests, which took place amid police action to prevent unauthorised gatherings in the capital.
Over 3,000 Protesters Detained Across Delhi
On Saturday, more than 3,000 protesters opposing CEC Gyanesh Kumar were detained in Delhi, including opposition leaders and political figures such as former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Police and other security personnel established extensive security arrangements around the capital to prevent unrest at Jantar Mantar. The proposed agitation was disrupted, with smaller gatherings taking place at different locations across the city.
Authorities had denied permission for the demonstration and warned against unauthorised gatherings. Security measures included roadblocks, traffic diversions and internet restrictions, aimed at preventing a repeat of the CJP’s July protest at Jantar Mantar, which had turned violent.
The detained protesters were taken to different locations, including Chhatrasal Stadium and various police stations. Most of them, including the opposition leaders, were released later on Saturday evening.
Dhruv Rathee Released, CJP Announces Fresh March
Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was also detained at his residence in Gurugram on Saturday and released early Sunday, according to the report.
Meanwhile, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde announced that protesters would march towards Jantar Mantar again on Sunday. He said the agitation would continue until CEC Gyanesh Kumar resigned.
The police cases and detentions mark a further escalation in the confrontation surrounding the proposed protest over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. The allegations against the Election Commission remain the central issue behind the demonstrations.
