Delhi Shopkeeper Robbed of ₹14 Lakh at Gunpoint in Model Town

New Delhi: In a bold armed robbery in northwest Delhi’s Model Town area, a 22-year-old shopkeeper was allegedly robbed of ₹14 lakh in cash by three unidentified men at gun and knifepoint on Friday afternoon, police said on Saturday. The incident has prompted an urgent investigation by Delhi Police, who are scanning CCTV footage and working to track down the suspects.

The victim, identified as Kartik, a resident of Mahendru Enclave, was inside his shop when the incident occurred, according to senior police officials. The trio reportedly entered the shop under a deceptive pretext before carrying out the robbery.

    How the Robbery Unfolded

Police received a PCR call about the robbery late Friday afternoon, triggering an immediate response from officers at the Model Town police station. According to Kartik’s complaint, the three men walked into his shop telling him they needed to update their mobile number in their Aadhaar details — a ruse to gain his trust and entry.

Once inside, one of the assailants bolted the shop door from the inside, preventing the shopkeeper from fleeing or raising an alarm. Another suspect allegedly pointed a pistol at Kartik’s head, while a third placed a knife to his neck and threatened him before demanding the cash.

Under duress, Kartik handed over a bag containing ₹14 lakh in cash to the robbers, who then fled the scene on foot, police said. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of small businesses in busy commercial areas of the capital.

    Police Investigation Underway

Delhi Police have registered an FIR in connection with the case and are conducting a detailed investigation to identify and arrest the accused. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the shop and nearby locations to trace the movement of the suspects before and after the robbery.

Officials said various police teams have been deployed to analyse clues and follow up on leads that may help in connecting the suspects to other recent crimes. They stressed that uncovering digital and visual evidence will be crucial in apprehending the armed robbers.

This is the second high-value robbery reported in the national capital within a week, adding pressure on law enforcement to respond swiftly and reassure the business community.

    Impact on Local Business Community

The daring daytime robbery has left local traders and residents shaken, with many expressing concerns over security in commercial hubs like Model Town. Business owners said they hoped police would enhance patrols and tighten safety measures to prevent similar incidents.

Several shopkeepers have urged the authorities to install more CCTV cameras, increase police visibility, and implement community policing strategies to deter criminals. Some residents also called for fast action to restore faith among merchants and customers alike.

    Police Appeal for Public Assistance

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the robbery or captured related footage on their mobile phones to come forward and share information. Authorities said that even minor details could prove instrumental in tracking down the suspects.

As the investigation progresses, Delhi Police officers are reportedly coordinating with neighbouring police stations to broaden the search area and examine whether the same group might be linked to other armed robberies.
