New Delhi: A 20-year-old man died after his car skidded off the road and fell into an open drain near Nangal Dewat area of southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Friday morning.

Residents of the area have raised concerns over the open drain, claiming that the spot has remained accident-prone for a long time and that repeated complaints to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) have not resulted in any action.

Car overturns after skidding at sharp turn

According to officials, the accident took place when Yashvendra, along with his female friend, was travelling through the Nangal Dewat area.

While taking a sharp turn near the Nangal Dewat red light, the vehicle allegedly lost control due to the slippery road surface and fell into the drain before overturning.

A PCR call regarding the accident was received at Vasant Kunj South Police Station. Police officials reached the spot and found that Yashvendra was driving the car, while his friend was seated in the co-passenger seat.

Youth succumbs to injuries during treatment

Police said Yashvendra sustained serious injuries in the accident and later died during treatment.

Officials stated that the vehicle belonged to the co-passenger but was being driven by Yashvendra at the time of the incident.

The two were students pursuing higher education at the same institution in the United States and had become friends there.

Residents accuse DDA of ignoring complaints

Local residents alleged that the open drain near the accident spot has caused several safety concerns in the past.

They claimed that complaints were repeatedly submitted to the DDA and meetings were also held demanding that the drain be covered, but no permanent solution was implemented.

Residents said the lack of safety measures has turned the area into an accident-prone zone.

Police begin investigation

Police said necessary legal proceedings have been initiated and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances behind the accident.
