Delhi Braces for Rain and Gusty Winds as IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Again, after few days of dry and hot weather, parts of Delhi are likely to receive rain and thunderstorms on May 11 and May 12, with the weather department issuing a yellow alert for both days. The city saw a rise in mercury on Friday, with the Safdarjung station recording 36.4 degrees Celsius, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the forecast, the national capital is expected to witness very light to light rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours on Monday and Tuesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are also likely.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 38 degrees Celsius on May 11, while the minimum temperature may settle near 27 degrees Celsius. Similar weather conditions are likely on May 12, with the maximum temperature expected to dip slightly to 37 degrees Celsius.

Before the rain begins, Delhi is expected to witness mainly clear skies on May 9 and May 10. The maximum temperature is likely to stay between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius during this period.

No warning has been issued for Saturday and sunday.

The rain and thunderstorm activity on May 11 and 12 may bring temporary relief from the heat, with temperatures expected to fall slightly after the showers.

By May 13, the weather is likely to improve with partly cloudy skies forecast across the city. Clear skies are expected to return on May 14, and no weather warning has been issued for the later part of the week.

The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially during evening travel hours due to strong winds and lightning.

Meanwhile, the day temperature settled at 34.4 degrees Celsius at Palam yesterday, five notches below normal, while Lodi Road and Ridge recorded maximums of 34.2 and 34.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Ayanagar saw mercury touching 35.1 degrees Celsius, a drop of over five degrees from what is usual for this time of the year.

Earlier in the morning, temperatures remained comfortable. The minimum settled at 22.6 degrees Celsius at the base station, Safdarjung, while Palam recorded 20.7 degrees Celsius.

The Ridge area was the coolest, recording 20 degrees Celsius, a significant 5.5 degrees below normal.
