New Delhi: A shocking incident unfolded in Delhi when a newly recruited constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) was arrested for robbing a jewellery store in broad daylight using a toy gun.
The accused, 22-year-old Gaurav Yadav, had only recently completed his BSF training in May 2025, having joined the force in 2023.
Posted in Fazilka, Punjab, Yadav’s descent into crime was allegedly driven by losses he suffered in online gambling and an unhealthy obsession with crime television shows, which appeared to have influenced his thinking.
Recent Probe into the matter
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam, Yadav took leave from his post on June 18 and travelled to Delhi, ostensibly to change trains. However, during his time waiting for the train connection, he began plotting the robbery.
Key Details of the Incident
The next day, June 19, he executed his plan at a jewellery store located in the Farsh Bazar area. Entering the shop and brandishing what appeared to be a real pistol—but was later discovered to be a toy gun—he threatened the staff and made away with four gold bracelets. After committing the robbery, he fled the scene on foot.
The incident prompted a swift investigation by the Delhi Police. A case was registered under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Farsh Bazar Police Station.
Authorities in Action
Investigators employed extensive technical surveillance measures, scrutinizing numerous CCTV recordings from the vicinity and analyzing call detail records (CDRs) and Internet Protocol Detail Record (IPDR) data.
They also submitted multiple queries through the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) system, which helped track the suspect’s movements and identity.
The breakthrough came as the collected data led officers to Gaurav Yadav, whose sudden travel to Delhi and subsequent disappearance coincided with the timeline of the robbery.
His arrest revealed the troubling motivation behind the act: spiraling financial pressures due to gambling losses and a distorted perception of crime, likely shaped by the crime shows he had been watching.
The case has raised serious concerns over the psychological well-being of personnel in uniform and the potential impact of unregulated online gambling and media influences.
The BSF has yet to release a formal statement on the arrest of their newly inducted constable.
