Blinkit’s 10-minute delivery is not a result of speed, but a result of system design: Deepinder Goyal

New Delhi : Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal, responding to criticism of Blinkit’s 10-minute delivery, said that this feature is not due to pressure on delivery partners to drive faster, but rather due to the large number of stores and robust system design.

‘Faster delivery is due to store density, not pressure on riders’

Responding to gig workers’ demands for better pay and working conditions, Goyal said that Blinkit’s model does not force delivery partners to drive faster. He also noted that there is no timer displayed to customers in the delivery partner’s app.

Explaining the delivery process, Goyal said that after receiving an order, it is packed in about 2.5 minutes, and after that, the delivery partner covers an average distance of less than two kilometers in about 8 minutes. This implies an average speed of about 15 km/h.

“10-minute delivery doesn’t mean risking your life”

Regarding safety concerns, Goyal said that people might assume a 10-minute delivery is life-threatening. He wrote on X, “I understand why people think 10 minutes means risking your life, because the complexity of this entire system design isn’t easy to understand.”

He said this perception arises because people don’t understand the robust and well-planned structure behind fast delivery.

“Why Delivery Partners Choose Platform Jobs”

Deepinder Goyal urged consumers to speak directly with delivery partners and learn why they voluntarily choose platform jobs. He said, “If you ever wanted to know why millions of Indians voluntarily choose platform work and sometimes find it better than regular jobs, just ask any rider on your next order.”

He claimed that people might change their thinking after hearing the responses of delivery partners.

‘Room for improvement, but criticism is misleading’

While Goyal acknowledged that no system is perfect and there’s always room for improvement, he called the criticism on social media misleading.

He said, “If I were outside this system, I too would think gig workers are being exploited, but that’s not the case.” He also assured that the company is constantly working to improve the platform.
