Demand to rename Delhi ‘Indraprastha’, BJP MP writes to Amit Shah

New Delhi: Praveen Khandelwal has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding that Delhi’s name be changed to ‘Indraprastha’. He stated that the name of the country’s capital should reflect its ancient civilization and cultural heritage.

Khandelwal noted in the letter that, according to historical texts and archaeological evidence, present-day Delhi is the same ancient Indraprastha, described as the capital of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata.

Reference to the Mahabharata and archaeological evidence

The MP stated that Indraprastha was a magnificent city situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, which closely resembles the geographical layout of present-day Delhi.

He stated that excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India at Purana Qila have uncovered remains dating back to 1000 BCE and painted grey ware pottery, which are linked to the Mahabharata period.

Khandelwal says the name “Delhi” doesn’t fully reflect the city’s ancient and original heritage.

Suggestion to install statues of the Pandavas

Speaking to ANI, Khandelwal said the city’s name should reflect its culture and civilization.

He also suggested installing statues of the five Pandavas in the capital to ensure future generations remain informed about its cultural heritage.

‘Kerala’ proposal approved

Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to change Kerala’s name to “Keralalam.” Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the “Kerala Alteration of Name Bill” will be sent to the state assembly for approval. This decision was taken ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.
