Dense fog in 15 districts of Punjab today; zero visibility in Chandigarh

Punjab and Chandigarh will experience dense fog this morning and evening (Wednesday, February 4). The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in this regard. However, the weather will remain dry.

According to the department, fog is expected in 15 districts today. These include Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Patiala, Barnala, Mansa, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Moga, Muktsar, and Bathinda. However, people traveling on the Amritsar to Ambala and Ambala to Delhi highways will encounter partially cloudy skies throughout the journey.

According to the Chandigarh Airport Authority, two flights to and from Delhi-Chandigarh were canceled. Flights from Chandigarh to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, and Abu Dhabi were delayed. Similarly, flights arriving from Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, and Abu Dhabi were also delayed. The delay time due to fog ranged from two to three hours.

Temperature to remain around 20 degrees this week

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in the northern and eastern parts of the state is likely to remain between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. While in the rest of the state, it may range between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in the state is expected to remain around normal during this week. The minimum temperature will be between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius.

Zero visibility in Chandigarh

The weather department recorded zero visibility in Chandigarh on Tuesday. ​​Visibility was 10 meters in Adampur (Punjab), 10 meters in Ballowal Khankhri (Nawanshahr), 50 meters in Bathinda, and 100 meters in Halwara. A cold wave was recorded in Bathinda. Meanwhile, a 3 to 5-degree increase in minimum temperature was recorded in Punjab.

Western Disturbance over Pakistan

Currently, a Western Disturbance is active over northern Pakistan and the adjoining Punjab region. This has resulted in a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere, which is particularly affecting northeastern Punjab and surrounding areas. However, this influence is limited to higher altitudes.

A new Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from the night of February 5, 2026. Meanwhile, the old Western Disturbance over Punjab and adjoining Haryana is gradually weakening and its impact is diminishing. Three Western Disturbances will be active over the next seven days. Therefore, cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist.
